Dr. Hayward takes a health economics perspective in his research on the quality and costs of health care in relation to health outcomes; the environmental and educational factors affecting physician practice and decision-making patterns; and the use of data from clinical trials to inform clinical practice guidelines. Broadly, he examines ways to improve healthcare quality and efficiency through the use of more sophisticated performance measures and market incentives. Most of this work has been based on a profile of patients with aging-related diseases – veterans.
